New Name (Wet Paint, no Drips) - Better Sound

28/01/01

We have decided to abandon the one mike set up and go for individual mikes on the instruments and vocals.  We aim to give our audience (if we have any!) the best sound possible.  We have found using the one mike fun but we can give a much more exciting sound miked up individual, so be on the look out. Another thing we have decided is to drop the DRIPS (there was only one and WE all know who that is).  We will be going under the name as WET PAINT.

Richard Lee has a voice, and it's a very good one, as we found out today. Richard came up with a song he wanted to do.  He has never sung before (not even in the bath!), so he thought he would like to give it a go.  Wow we couldn't believe it (even Scooter, the dog liked it).  So we are now working on some new songs from Richard and Pete has a few up his sleeve (long sleeve shirts, please) and Phill has been working up a few more.

04/02/01

Another hard practice with Luke in bed with the flu.  Phill has still not got his voice back 100% (maybe that's a blessing) and now Pete is beginning to croak a bit. Richard's (the bald headed banjo one) new song is coming on well and we have just worked another new one in "Used To Be", a great song done as a trio Pete lead, Phill tenor and baldy Richard bass. It went well right from the word go. Miss the bass though, hope Luke's well enough for next practice.

08/04/01

Richard Lee has lost his voice now but we aim to run through some material. Phill has bad news, he has got his voice back. Still searching for a dedicated fiddle player, so get on to us if you want a job!!

05/05/01

Richard Lee played Ashokan Farewell on fiddle in public at a private function. Is there no stopping this kid!  He is aiming to play some fiddle as he reckons Wet Paint couldn't find a fiddle player so he thought he would do it himself. Who's playing banjo while you are on the fiddle?

17/05/01

Wet Paint made their way down to Byfleet in Surrey to play at the BLUE ANCHOR folk club run by Mike Peach. A wonderful time we had and what a fantastic club to play at. We were most welcomed and apparently there were more banjos there than there has ever been (it's got to be the instrument!). We played all acoustic and Phill had only one mishap (apart from not reading the programme right), he broke a string on the encore! Thanks for having us!

30/05/01

HOT NEWS Richard Miller (mandolin) will be leaving the band to start a new career over in Germany. All of us wish him every success on his new venture.  The band welcomes Charlie Ogunremi who will be taken over on mandolin and lead/harmony vocals.

17/07/01

OUR NEW MICROPHONES have arrived and we are now rigged up to blow the roof off, not really!! We have been working hard with Charlie in with us, makes a great difference. Watch out for us at SURREY MINI FESTIVAL in August, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the us. Ideas are coming together for another CD.

Next we had Wet Paint and The Drips. I'm not sure about the name but the boys can play. Master banjo player/tutor Phill Morley has honed these lads from nothing to where they are today and a most pleasant sound they make, too, around one mike. It is good to see Phill in action again after his surgery, and I congratulate him on the band. They had everyone spellbound and silent at times during their performance.

And now, we have one of the countries most up and coming group of young men the south has seen for years: Wet Paint and The Drips. I'm not sure about the name, but those boys can play. Master banjo player/tutor Phill Morley has honed these lads from nothing to where they are today and a most pleasant sound they make too. However I feel that when a band plays around one mic, It's easy to forget the folk your playing to. It is good to see Phil in action again after his op's and I congratulate him on the band. They had everyone spellbound and silent at times during their performance.

Phill,

Sorry I haven't written. Been out of town this weekend. Yes, the CD arrived Friday and I had a chance to listen to it while I was on the road. Great job. You guys sound like you have a lot of fun playing music, which is one of the most important factors both for yourselves and fans. Nice to hear how bluegrass is interpreted from across the big pond.

The Banjo Gazette     Vol. 1/2

Now this one is "pure" bluegrass, and makes no apologies for the fact. The cover would indicate that you are getting 12 tracks for your money, but in fact, when one looks at the medleys, that figure rises to 17 tunes, all arranged by the band. For those who don't know the line-up is Phill Morley on guitar, banjo and vocals, Richard Lee on banjo and guitar, Richard Miller on mandolin and blues harp, and Luke Bampton on double bass.

At the risk of upsetting our American cousins, it is Phill's view that this band could hold it's own in the States, a view with which I respectfully agree. Quite frankly, you could go on the internet, pay a lot more, and get a lot less.

All the various instrumentals are show pieced, from bass in "Luke's Doghouse Blues", through the mandolin in "Soldier's Joy", and the harmonica and banjo in "Dixie/Dear Old Dixie".

Hello Phill,

I think that the  'Wet Paint' CD is great and I'm really hooked on it at present. It's all my kind of music, my kind of songs and the young banjo man is inspirational. Congratulations to all. I can't wait for the next one, especially if it's going to have guitar instrumentals added to the sound.

News From Greg Carhill - Special C.

Got this email from Greg 20/02/01

Phil,

Thanks for your kinds words - we thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Just returned
home last night and must leave tomorrow for a tour of the southwestern
states.
Had to order more CDs from Pinecastle Records twice on the tour - sold
everything we had with us - a fantastic thing! Hope to come back soon.

Y'all sounded very good in Steeple Morden, even with your voice problems.

Take care and keep on pickin'!

Best,
Greg Cahill
